ORCHARD PARK, NY - There are more changes happening at One Bills Drive this off-season.

The Bills announced on twitter Monday afternoon that Buddy Nix will step away from his role as General Manager and transition to Special Assistant.

Nix released the following comments on the Bills twitter page:

"I've made the decision to step away as GM because I feel it's the right time ... good young roster with excellent head coach & staff."

"I feel strongly that #Bills are on the right course for success. This is going to be an exciting time for our team and our fans"

Russ Brandon, the Buffalo Bills President and CEO, said this on twitter following the announcement. "I would like to offer my heartfelt thanks to Buddy for his contributions as GM. We are a far better team today thanks to his tireless work."

The Bills did not immediately identify a new General Manager but Brandon did say during a February interview with 2 On Your Side's Adam Benigni that Assistant General Manager Doug Whaley is the "future of this franchise."

Brandon told reporters Monday that the organization does have a plan for the future but that he's not going to address it today because "today is about Buddy."

In January, Benigni asked Whaley about his decision to stay with the Bills despite being considered a potential General Manager candidate with other NFL organizations. Whaley said, "I'm a competitor and the challenge. There's nothing that's been promised to me but to give me the resources to do my job and help those guys put this franchise on the right track. And I love a good challenge. That's what I signed up for. And I hope to be here long enough to see it completed."
