LEWISTON, N.Y.-It was a thrilling victory for Canisius and a gut wrenching defeat for Niagara Wheatfield Sunday night in Federation hockey action at Dwyer Arena in Lewiston, New York.
The Crusaders scored with seven seconds remaining in the third period to beat the Falcons 3-2.
The Falcons led 2-to-1 after the first period. Frank Vecchio and Matt Paonessa scored for the Falcons. Austin Askoy scored for Canisius in the first period.
In the third period the Crusaders tied it on the power play at the 9:03 mark. Junior # 23 Pat Mitchell beat goaltender Mike Sommers to tie it at 2. Then with seven seconds remaining # 13 Quinn Beiter got the game winner. With the win Canisius remains unbeaten in ten games. The Crusaders are 6-0 in Federation league play.
Canisius interim head coach Jason Bridge told Two On Your Side's Stu Boyar "I think Niagara Wheatfield did a good job, they played hard and took it to us in the first two periods. We responded in the third, we tied it and won it. Quinn made a nice play to freeze the goaltender and then roofed it."
Sommers had 20 saves for the Falcons. Connor Naughton had 23 saves for Canisius.
The Crusaders play St. Francis Thursday night at the Northtown Center in Amherst.
