NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y.- St. Joe's basketball team will enter the 2012-2013 season with high expectations according to Coach Mark Simon. "We had eleven juniors on the team last year and have nine seniors back this year. We expect them to act like seniors and show their leadership." Simon spoke with Two On Your Side's Stu Boyar Friday before the Marauders scrimmaged Niagara Falls.
"Were expecting to have real power and be real strong as a team. Last year we were focused with Reggie Agbeko who was a great player but now we have to combine all our talents and expect everyone to do a little bit of everything" said senior. Dylan Hall who added that "our post play is one of the strongest parts of our team."
Senior Jordan Glover is one of the Marauders key performers who needs to contribute consistently for St. Joe's to have the kind of season they hope for. "He's what makes us go" says Coach Simon. When he is on his game and he has us running, we can be very good."
Senior Dan Maher believes that another strength that the team has is on the outside. "We got a lot of guys that can shoot the ball. Even our bigger guys can step out and shoot." "We have a lot of guys that can put it into the hoop. Our biggest thing will be if we can defend, in the Catholic league you need to know how to do that"said coach Simon.
In the Monsignor Martin League, the Marauders will face the challenge of defeating their rival the Canisius Crusaders. Maher loves the competition each year against Canisius."It's the best time of the year when we play them. It's a great atmosphere along with all our fans and theirs and it's just so much fun". The Crusaders have won the Manhattan cup for the past two years. The St. Joe's Canisius games are scheduled for Saturday January 12 and February 16, both at Canisius College.
The Marauders open their season Tuesday December 4 in the Al Pastor Tournament at Daemen College against Kenmore West. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:45 pm.
