ALDEN, N.Y.-Each of the past two seasons the Alden Bulldogs have seen their dream of a state championship end in heartbreaking fashion in the Far West Regionals. This weekend the Bulldogs make their third straight trip to the Far West Regionals.
Last year the Bulldogs lost in overtime to Hornell after leading most of the game. The year before Hornell also beat Alden. Junior quarterback Brian Stoldt told Two On Your Side's Stu Boyar "Personally, I want the opportunity to play Hornell again and hopefully some day I do but you know its not really about revenge at this point. You just want to go as far as you can and right now you're at a regional and you want to win. East Rochester is a great team and we have to prepare for them."
Senior Matt Shields is thrilled to be back in the Far West Regionals but also knows this is his last chance to win a state championships. "I try not to think about it but its always there that I only have a few weeks left so when I go when I go out there I know I am going to play as hard as I possibly can, play to the whistle and have no regrets when I'm out there on the field."
East Rochester won its first Section 5 championship in 27 years with a 48-34 win over Livonia last weekend. The Bombers allow just 14 points per game. Alden head coach Dick Diminuco told Stu "I think they're pretty balanced. They understand if they blitz us they understand that our quarterback is pretty good at reading blitzes. They're well coached, they know what they need to do to stop our backs and our passing game. They're pretty balanced. Their coaches are sharp and know what to do and when to do it so it should be a good chess match."
Kickoff is scheduled for 3-pm Saturday afternoon at All High Stadium in Buffalo. You can watch the game via live stream here on wny.highschoolsports.net with Stu Boyar doing the play by play and Dick Gallagher doing the color commentary and analysis.
