BUFFALO, N.Y-Canisius won the Monsignor Martin regular season championship Saturday afternoon with a 78-60 win over St. Joe's.
The Crusaders got off to a great start scoring the first 15 points of the game. St. Joe's didn't get on the scoreboard until just over four minutes remained in the first quarter.
Canisius head coach Kyle Husband told Two On Your Side's Stu Boyar "we were upset by the way we played against St. Joe's last time. We played really hard on defense. That 15-0 run to start really help that's just not going to happen every time. Its feels great to win the championship. Our guys deserved it. They played hard all year and they came out and played hard today. It was one of our goals and it feels good to get."
Making certain Canisius got off to a great start was junior # 25 Adam Weir. He scored the games first nine points and finished with a game high 23. Husband told Stu "Weir is most successful when he gets to the rim and gets to the rim early. When he does that he's pretty tough." Senior Matt Hart # 23 had 22 points, 18 of them coming on three point shots.
For St. Joe's the big man, # 35 Reggie Agbeko led the way with 19 points including a monster dunk in the first half.
Canisius finishes the season 18-6 overall and 10-1 in league play with the one loss coming to St. Joe's. St. Joe's finishes the regular season 19-4 and 9-2 in league play. The Marauders had one game, at Aquinas postponed. St. Joe's finishes the regular season on a two game losing streak.
