WILLIAMSVILLE, NY -- The first women's professional tennis tournament to be held in Western New York began Sunday at the Miller Tennis Center.
The event is the Sargent & Collins $10,000 Women's Pro Tennis Championships. It's a USTA Pro Circuit event and will feature a singles and doubles draw.
The event will feature players ranked as high as 300 in the world and will include an international field. There are players from Brazil, Russia, Canada and several top Americans.
Tournament director and Miller Tennis Center owner Todd Miller says the event will give Western New York a chance to see some rising Tennis stars. "Wozniacki, Sharapova, dozens of others played this circuit and went on to become elite players. Their slogan is catch a rising star and there is a chance one of these players might emerge and really become a great player."
Qualifying rounds run through Monday. The main tournament draw begins on Tuesday and goes to Friday. Semifinals are set for Saturday and the Championship matches are scheduled for Sunday, July 3rd.
