Buffalo Police say a man was shot and wounded by a police officer Thursday night during a foot chase which started when he was spotted carrying an assault rifle.

21-year old Joseph Craig is listed in serious condition at ECMC. He faces a variety of charges including criminal weapon possession, drug possession, and menacing.

Spokesman Mike DeGeorge says it began around 9:30 PM when officers from the Housing Unit spotted two armed men on Moselle Street. DeGeorge says the officers started chasing Craig, and one of them fired his service weapon which struck Craig during the chase. Police say there was a struggle with Craig but the gun was recovered in the 200 block of Stevens Street.

Police are still searching for the second suspect who was thought to be carrying a handgun.

An investigation is underway into the shooting. DeGeorge says that is standard procedure whenever an officer fires his or her weapon.
