West Side Residents Plan Protest over Sexual Assaults

BUFFALO, NY- West side residents are planning a series of protests and demonstrations to raise awareness about the recent rapes and sexual assaults that have occurred in the community.

Organizers are encouraging people to attend the Gathering of Awareness and Take Back the Night events Sunday to send a message that violence will not be tolerated.

"Raise awareness and try to get this community together to figure out what we want to do about it to make our neighborhood a safer place," Kara Kenney, Gathering of Awareness Host said.

The Gathering of Awareness will begin at 4 p.m. Sunday in Bidwell Park, while Take Back the Night will march in Symphony Circle beginning at 7 p.m.

When asked by 2 on Your Side, Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown did not explain why the city did not alert West Side community organizations to the incidents.

"A very quick arrest was made. We do have an individual in custody, and we believe that additional charges could be brought against this individual," Brown said.

The person in custody is a 16-year-old male.
