HAMBURG, NY — As he watched the skies darken and the wind dramatically increase from the front porch of his Creekview Drive home on Thursday, Kevin Karas recalls the moment when instinct told him that it was time to grab his 3-year-old daughter and 12-year-old cousin, and seek shelter.
"We watched, probably about ten houses down, all these garbage cans being lifted up 15-20 feet in the air, and smashing, and then at that time we called it quits and ran down in the basement," Karas told WGRZ-TV.
Upon emerging, he noticed his Subaru Outback turned awkwardly sideways and sitting just off his driveway in a side yard.
“It dawned on me that we had better check out the video from our security cameras,” Karas recalled.
The footage reveals the nearly two-ton SUV being lifted and turned, while a nearby trailer crashed into the front of it.
“I thought, oh my God that was a tornado!” he said.
According to Karas, the vehicle sustained damage to its bumper, hood, and right quarter panel, and he expects the repair bill will amount to several thousand dollars.
In the meantime, he has a story –and the pictures to prove it -- to pass down to his family that will be priceless.
“It really was a once in a lifetime thing, I think,” he said.
