BUFFALO, NY -- Breast cancer patients have to deal with changes in their appearance on top of all the other concerns and stresses that come with cancer treatment.
Losing their hair during chemotherapy is one of the most visible ones. For some women, it can be devastating.
But there is help available through the Breast Resource Center located inside Roswell Park Cancer Institute. Any cancer patient is welcome-- not just Roswell patients.
They can get free advice and information about a myriad of services available for patients. And they have a free wig program that's funded by the Bosom Buddies Breast Cancer Support Group.
"We have a nice selection of wigs," says Joanne Janicki, Coordinator of the WNY Breast Resource Center.
"And we will spend as much time with the ladies as they need to pick out something, whether it's close to their style, or whether they want to try being a blonde for a change or a redhead-- whatever is going to work for them," adds Janicki.
Beverly Holcomb is a breast cancer patient from Eden who got help selecting a wig at the Breast Resource Center and she says she's gotten positive feedback from family and friends. Having the option of wearing a wig brings her comfort.
"If you don't have hair, people are gonna look at you," says Holcomb.
"And I don't want people to feel uncomfortable-- but I would never deny it-- and if anyone asked me, I would tell them about it. It makes you feel more comfortable. It gives you dignity and I like it," she said with a smile.
The WNY Breast Resource Center also has a supply of hats, bandanas and scarves available. If a woman is in need of a breast prosthesis, they have a wide variety of those to choose from as well.
Some women can't be bothered with a wig. And if they're really into showing off their beautiful baldness, they have washable tattoos, perhaps for a mom who wants to let her kids have a little fun with her new look.
