LOCKPORT, N.Y. - Cancer has been an unwelcome part of Robert Eberhardt's family tree for decades.
"My grandmother died from cancer when I was about 12. My sister Gail died in 1998. She was 49, from cancer. And my other sister Valerie had cancer, and she is a survivor. My dad passed away two years ago from cancer," said Eberhardt, a Lockport High School math teacher.
He rides in honor and in memory of his loved ones, but for other families too.
"And when I think back to 1998, I watched my sister die. I don't want other people to have to go through that."
Eberhardt has had plenty of numbers to crunch over the past few years.
This Saturday marks his fourth ride. He's raised $7000 this year and more than $13,000 to date. Last year he tackled the 100 mile "Century Ride," and this year he'll ride more than 60 to do his part in helping fund cancer research.
