State AGs urge FCC to block illegal robocalls

NEW YORK -- New York State's Attorney General and 29 other state attorney generals are calling for the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to grant telephone providers the ability to block illegal robocalls.

Recently, the FCC called for the public to comment on rules allowing telephone providers to block several types of "spoofed' calls, which can sometimes be used by scammers, and are calls which appear to be coming from one number, but are actually coming from a different number.

Under the rules, companies would have clear guidance on blocking unsolicited calls from numbers that have been requested to be blocked and from invalid, unallocated numbers.

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman calls the changes a "no-brainer", saying the government needs to step in to protect consumers.

"These new rules would be a big win for ordinary New Yorkers, and a blow against scam artists across the country,” Schneiderman said.
