TOWN OF COLDEN, N.Y. -- An Arcade man died Thursday morning after a rollover accident on Phillips Road in the Town of Colden.
A 2004 Volkswagen Jetta was traveling north on Phillips Road when it lost control at the top of the hill. It then left the road and went into a ditch on the west side of the road. The vehicle was flipped onto its roof.
State Police say they believe the vehicle's speed and failure to keep right were the main factors in the crash.
A bystander called 911 to report the accident as another witness went to grab fire extinguishers.
Both then tried to put the fire out with little success.
They were able to get the vehicle's passenger, Hunter Delia, 18, of Yorkshire out of the side of the vehicle safely.
The intense fire did not allow them to get the driver, Tristan Pleace, 18, of Arcade out of the vehicle. Pleace was pronounced dead at the scene.
Delia is in stable condition.
