An Allegeny County man is being charged with attempted murder after he allegedly shot at police and tried to ram a vehicle at them.

Investigators say Gene R. Fanton, Jr., 52, of Belmont, shot at officers and drove a stolen van at them after they tried to stop him for robbing a Rite Aid drug store in Wellsville.

"This is another indication of how dangerous police work is and how quickly it changes for the officers on the street and how quickly they have to think," says New York State Police Captain Christopher Cummings.

Fanton faces attempted murder, armed robbery, reckless endangerment and grand larceny. He could face additional charges pending further investigation.

None of the officers involved in the chase were seriously hurt.
