The Genesee County Sheriff says a Batavia family of four is dead following a head-on collision around 11 a.m. Sunday on Route 63 near Little Canada Road in East Bethany. Responding firefighters say there was little they could do to help the family when they arrived on scene.
Sheriff Gary Maha says the Boyce family was in a minivan when for some reason the driver crossed the double yellow line and hit a tractor trailer.
Peter Boyce, 35, who was at the wheel, was pronounced dead at the scene along with his wife Connie, 33, who was a front seat passenger in the minivan. Their two children sons Alexander, 9, and Bradley, 5, were both back seat passengers.
The driver of the tractor trailer Brian Hack is from Welland, Ontario. Deputies say he was not hurt in the crash but was obviously very shaken.
Sheriff Maha says the investigation is continuing but he did say it occurred along an S-curve in Route 63 which is a common shortcut between the Thruway and Interstate 390. Maha says there have been other accidents in that area in the past including some fatalities. But he adds that none were as serious with this kind of loss of life.
