Two children were inside a car that rolled across the road and struck a house in Springville Sunday afternoon, the Erie County Sheriff's Office said.
No one was hurt in the accident.
The children, ages four and six, found the keys to truck sitting on the floor inside, the sheriff's office said.
They turned the truck's ignition to the "on" position and put it in gear. That's when the vehicle rolled down a hill, across the street and hit the house at 56 Prospect Street, the sheriff said.
The truck belongs to the children's father, Benjamin Kelly. It was parked in his driveway right before the accident.
The front porch of the house across the street was damaged. No one was home at the time.
Lt. Brad Roth with the Erie County Sheriff's Department said, "don't ever underestimate your kids. They're watching what you're doing and they're pretty good at mimicking whatever you do, even four and six year old kids. They apparently have watched the father in the past how he started the vehicle and just mimicked him. If he just hadn't left the keys in there they'd never been able to do it." Lt. Roth says it would have also been a good idea to put the truck's emergency brake on.
The investigation continues. The sheriff said charges are pending against the children's father, primarily vehicle and traffic violations.
