One thing you've got to love about the internet; there is information available on just about anything, and sometimes that information goes inside areas normal journalists can't touch.
Such is not the case, however, with a recent internet piece of "inside information" concerning the Bills and Sabres owner Tom Golisano and Ralph Wilson's intention to (or so it says) move the Bills to Toronto.
So pervasive is this supposed disclosure of a recent meeting involving Golisano, that I figure rather than answering a ton of emails about it, as I've done, I'd just address it right here.
If you're one of the few out there who hasn't seen it, let's just say it is just believable enough to be almost credible. Poorly written and almost clumsy in its conclusions, the mysterious internet "story" has still managed to gain some circulation among Bills fans.
There is no "author" taking credit for this "scoop", that among other things tells of a meeting where Golisano claims Wilson has planned to move the Bills to Toronto for quite some time now.
Oh, it gets better. There are supposedly businessmen in Toronto "ready to plunk down mega-millions for the Bills and move them there".
Wilson, according to this secret report by a secret author, turned down a lucrative offer from Golisano and Rich Products (gee, I guess this must mean Bob Rich Jr.?) because Wilson wants it to be his legacy that he's the first person to bring international play to the NFL.
The "report" goes on and on about how the Bills wouldn't be able to transfer the name "Bills" to Toronto, but in 3-4 years the Bills would have a domed stadium in downtown Buffalo based on the promise they'd receive an expansion team once the new stadium is built.
You know what is really sad about this? Well, other than the fact this "report" is total, complete, 100 per cent FICTION?
What's sad, is how many people have sent me, and no doubt others in the media, this same "secret report", wondering if there is any TRUTH to it?
What's also sad, is that someone out there is getting his/her jollies putting this garbage out there in hopes someone will actually believe it. It doesn't even have to be well written (which it isn't) or based on even partial truth (which it also isn't) to be effective.
Think what you will about Ralph C. Wilson, but know this: the single, LAST thing Wilson would want on this earth is to see his beloved Bills move anywhere, much less Toronto.
This isn't about Toronto, by the way, which happens to be a wonderful city Buffalo could learn a lot from, but rather Toronto as a realistic home for the Buffalo Bills.
Could that day eventually get here? Certainly, and another meteorite like the one that erased the dinosaurs will probably whack us one of these days as well.
Based on what I know and feel, the odds are roughly the same for either event happening.
