A water main break in Buffalo early this morning has shut down part of Chippewa Street.

It happened around 4:00 AM on Chippewa between Pearl and Washington Streets. Water bubbling up from the break flooded the area and caused parts of Chippewa to buckle.

As the area began to resemble a lake, police blocked off intersections and water crews were summoned to the scene.

The water was shut off by 6:30, eventually leaving behind a muddy mess. The broken main dates to 1890, according to a city water department worker.

Parts of the road were left unstable and visible breaks in the asphalt stretch across the center line.

Crews plan to repair the pipe throughout the day. It could take longer to repair the heavily damaged road.
