Jim Kelly made his name playing football in Buffalo. Now the Hall of Fame quarterback's son, Hunter Kelly, will have a lasting impact too. The Hunter's Hope Foundation and the University at Buffalo have announced plans for a research institute focusing on Krabbe disease and related ailments.
It will be part of the university's Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and named for the seven-year-old who suffers from the deadly disease. The foundation is establishing a $3 million endowment for the institute at the school's medical campus.
The disease is inherited and hinders development of the fatty sheath that protects nerve fibers in the brain. It induces seizures, stiffens limbs and slows motor and mental development. It has no known cure, and most people born with it don't live past their second birthday.
