NEW YORK (AP) - NBC News has admitted it made an error by editing a recording of George Zimmerman's call to police the night he shot Trayvon Martin.

The network aired an edited version of Zimmerman's call, trimmed to suggest that Zimmerman volunteered that Martin was black.

But the portion of the tape that was cut out had the 911 dispatcher asking Zimmerman if the suspicious person was "black, white or Hispanic." Zimmerman responded, "He looks black."

Martin, 17, was fatally shot by Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer in Sanford, Fla., on Feb. 26. Though Martin was unarmed, Zimmerman said he fired in self-defense.

In a statement on Tuesday, NBC cited an "error made in the production process." It expressed regret and apologized to viewers.
