Woman pleads guilty to stealing mom's SS benefits

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- A Williamsville woman pleaded guilty to stealing social security retirement benefits Friday, according to the U.S. Attorney's office.

Diane Cleversley, 68, faces a maximum penalty of 10 years behind bars and a $250,000 fine if convicted.

Cleversley was charged after failing to let the Social Security Administration know about her mother's death in 2001. Social Security checks continued to be deposited into a joint account Cleversley holds with her mother. Cleversley, a retired social worker, then transferred funds from the joint savings account into her own account, resulting in stealing $176,405 between July 2001 and Feb. 2017

Cleversley will be sentenced October 2.
