WNYers get creative with rocks

Photojournalist Dooley O'Rourke Celebrates Western New York with a group of Buffalonians looking to put a smile on people's faces with hand-crafted, hidden rocks.

BUFFALO, NY-- You can find people looking to do all sorts of things at a place like Canalside, but would you expect to see them looking for painted rocks?

“It’s really so simple it’s even hard to explain it,” says Kimberly LaRussa, who started the Facebook group, Sweet Buffalo Rocks, after a friend told her about a similar group in Florida.

“You’re painting your own rock, your hiding it, you can also find rocks, and the goal is to re-hide it for others to find,” she said.

Simple enough. Think of the Pokemon Go craze last summer, but without your phone… sort of.

“It’s the same concept, you go out and look for rocks, but the difference with the Pokemon craze is you get to make the rock yourself,” LaRussa said.

LaRussa currently has about 3.000 members in her group and to date, she has yet to find a down side to this.

“It gets people out of the house, enjoying the day, finding a rock that they didn’t know they were going to find, and then they get to post it on Facebook, and the person who painted it get a smile, and the person who found the rock gets a smile, it’s just amazing,” she said.

So find a rock and let your creative side shine.
