Gus Macker Moves to Grand Island

GRAND ISLAND, N.Y. -- This weekend, the Gus Macker 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament is finding a new home on Grand Island.

Friday night, organizers told us what to expect if you're an athlete or if you're just going to watch.

After 23 years in Buffalo, and one at Darien Lake, the Gus Macker 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament moved to Grand Island for 2015.

"Right where we are in the street, one way in and one way out. There's no access points of loitering or different places where people can run to, anything like that, and being on an island, and the amount of security we'll have in force, I mean, it's a very, very safe environment," says event producer Corey McGowan.

This is McGowan's first time organizing the logistics for a basketball tournament. He says 12-hundred players are registered and thousands will show up to watch them this weekend.

Sixteen law enforcement officers will be inside the tournament to supplement all of the agencies normally on-duty on Grand Island.

Gus Macker founder Scott McNeal says the new location is like bringing the tournament back to its roots.

"Tried to duplicate what happened in mom and dad's driveway. It's more of a community coming together that's happening here in Grand Island. So our goal is to make it as much like the game we played in the driveway as we can," he says.

"Sports is a huge common ground to be able to build relationships around the communities," adds event manager Bill Gorman.

Friday night, a few teams took advantage of the early set-up to get in some last minute training ahead of what organizers expect to be a big weekend for Grand Island.

"We have teams that are coming in from Michigan. I know there are a bunch of teams from Canada, Toronto area, so just so many different groups of people getting together just for the one cause is the love of the game of basketball," said Gorman.

There is a traffic note to pass along. Grand Island Blvd. will be closed from Baseline to Whitehaven throughout the tournament.

The tournament starts Saturday morning and continues through Sunday.
