WNY Lawmakers Tour Central Terminal

Pols Push For Central Terminal Train Station

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- A group of lawmakers toured the Central Terminal Thursday as a potential site for Buffalo's new train station.

This happened a day after Governor Andrew Cuomo made an impromptu announcement committing $1 million toward a study to pick out the new train station's location.

Congressman Brian Higgins, State Senator Tim Kennedy, Assembly Members Sean Ryan and Crystal Peoples-Stokes and Buffalo Common Councilman David Franczyk agreed that the Central Terminal is the preferred location.

"What we are advancing here is a very compelling argument that this site needs to be considered first and foremost," Higgins said, standing alongside the other lawmakers in the Central Terminal.

Other sites reportedly under consideration include an area near Larkinville and a plot of land at Canalside. Higgins and others said the Central Terminal project, at this point, appears to make more sense.

"I think now the time has come for this neighborhood to take part, like the phoenix, to come into this renaissance and be part of this revolution in the City of Buffalo," Franczyk said.

Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown told 2 On Your Side that he hasn't made up his mind on a location. Thursday he appointed Robert Shibley, dean of UB's School of Architecture and Planning, to oversee the study process.

Brown said he wants to see the results of the study before endorsing one location over another.

The $1 million in state money comes with a catch. The City of Buffalo must commit to get the study done within six months or the state won't foot the bill.

That funding is part of $25 million already earmarked in Albany for a new Buffalo train station. The remainder of the money will be available in 2018.

The current Buffalo Amtrak station was shut down a few weeks ago after a roof collapse following heavy rains, but it has since reopened.
