WHEATFIELD, N.Y. -- There's an update on a long ordeal for people living near a landfill in Wheatfield off Nash Road that they claim is making them sick.
The town board Tuesday night awarded a contract to a company that will put up a fence around the former Niagara Sanitation Landfill with work starting next month and a state grant covering much of the cost.
This comes as the neighbors continue to move forward with a class action lawsuit over illnesses they believe were caused by the landfill.
The State Department of Environmental Conservation in July released results from soil sampling tests near the former landfill and found there's contamination located near the center of the landfill, no contamination from the landfill is impacting the surface of the the soil on neighboring properties and it does not rise to a level that would lead to a full cleanup.
An attorney representing some of the neighbors told our partners at Investigative Post he doesn't believe the results and he told state authorities he found dangerous levels of chemicals inside homes, not soil.
