Unknown Stories of WNY: Local Female Presidential Hopefuls

BUFFALO, N.Y. - As Hillary Clinton continues her mission to become the nation's first female president, she is doing so on a campaign trail blazed by a pair of women who called Western New York home.

Belva Lockwood ran twice, 1884 and 1888, on the Equal Rights party line, more than 3 decades before women even had the right to vote.

A century later, Brooklyn Congressional Rep. Shirley Chisholm made a bid for the White House as well, running for the Democratic nomination in 1972. Chisholm would ultimately move to Williamsville, and is buried in Buffalo's Forest Lawn Cemetery.
