Tonawanda Coke Reaches $115,000 Settlement

TONAWANDA, N.Y- Tonawanda Coke and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration reached a settlement on fines in relation to an explosion at the plant in January.

The company will pay a little more than $115,000, and will also establish comprehensive safety and health management systems.

An OSHA investigation found that the blast was caused by over-pressure in a coke oven manifold that released coke oven gas in an enclosed area, where it then ignited.

Three workers were injured in the explosion and residents reported hearing it miles away.
