Tonawanda Coke blast rattles residents

TONAWANDA, NY - We went to Tonawanda Coke Friday after concerned viewers contacted us with reports of an explosion there around noon, and they wanted to know what happened.

Police say there was a build-up of gas in a coke oven, and that the release of that gas through a safety valve caused a minor explosion and small fire.

No one was hurt and the plant is investigating what caused the build-up.

The Investigative Post's Dan Telvock was at the scene shortly after all of this happened. You'll hear from him on Channel 2 News Tonight at 11 p.m.
