Sheriff clarifies condition of teen hit while riding his bike

Teen Bicyclist Hit By Car In Pomfret

POMFRET, N.Y. -- Chautauqua County Sheriff Joseph Gerace has clarified the condition of a teen hit by a vehicle while riding his bike.

He tells 2 On Your Side the 15-year-old boy remains on life support so doctors can make preparations to harvest his organs.

Earlier in the day, the sheriff was incorrectly told the teen had been pronounced dead.

Tuesday afternoon, the driver, Nicholas D. Galardo, 27 of Lowell Road in Fredonia, was heading west on Route 20 when he hit the teen on Route 20, as the teen entered the roadway into Galardo's lane.

Galardo could not avoid hitting the teen, deputies say.

The 15-year-old, whose name has not been released, was flown to UPMC Hamot Hospital in Erie, Pa.

Deputies say the teen is from Brocton.

Galardo was not charged.
