BUFFALO, NY -- 2 On Your Side has learned Former Buffalo Bill Fred Smerlas has decided not to run for the 28th U.S. Congressional seat that's currently held by Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-Fairport).
Last week, The Republican Party in Monroe County, which includes Rochester, nominated Smerlas as their candidate. Erie County Republican Chair Nick Langworthy also told 2 On-Your-Side he was convinced Smerlas would make an excellent candidate after several phone conversations with him.
Langworthy tells WGRZ-TV that Smerlas made his decision not to run based on family considerations.
"He has teenage children and decided he couldn't be fully devoted to their needs and a race for Congress at the same time," Langworthy said.
While disappointed that Smerlas has decided not to run, Langworthy said he can fully understand and support Smerlas' decision.
