Democratic leaders remain optimistic that today's critical health care vote in the Senate will come out in their favor. Two moderate Democrats still haven't committed to either side in the debate over the bill, which would require most everyone to purchase insurance. Sen. Mary Landrieu of Louisiana has suggested she'll support the move to debate, but Sen. Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas has been careful to avoid taking a public position. If both vote that debate can go forward on the legislation, Democrats will have the 60 votes needed to prevail. If that's the case, lawmakers will launch into weeks of debate with numerous amendments expected. The Senate vote comes two weeks after the House approved its own health care bill.
