A Buffalo teen wants to go down in history for how low she can bend under a limbo bar. Shemika Charles, 17, easily went under a limbo bar that was 8.5 inches off the ground.

Shemika Charles was born in Trinidad, but raised in Buffalo, New York.

When she first started to limbo, she managed to get under a 15-inch bar.

Bob Diaz trained Shemika. He says " the world is fascinated by limbo because it's been an entertainment form for over a century." He says what Shemika does is fascinating. "To transfer her weight from here to the tummy, to the leg to the thighs and bring it back, like a spoon," said Diaz.

Limbo is a dance from the West Indies. Originally, only men did limbo.

Shemika is 5'8 and can go as low as the height of a beer bottle.

The current record according to Guinness World Records was sent in March 1991. The lowest height for a bar under which a limbo dancer has passed is 6 inches off the floor.

Shemika has performed the limbo for over three years. Her goal is to become a dance instructor.

You can watch her perform with the Caribbean Extravaganza Steel Drum Band around Western New York. The band has toured Korea, Dubai and other places around the world.
