Father Joseph Moreno prays for miracles every day, and he's looking for some heroes to answer his prayers by filling bare shelves full of food for the needy.
His St. Lawrence Catholic food pantry is nearly of out food, partly because it helped feed victims of the flood in Gowanda earlier this year.
Father Moreno says requests for help are increasing, and he feels it's only going to get worse until more people return to work. "The new twist this year is that families that were getting unemployment insurance last year, have lost those benefits and are now desperately looking for help," Moreno said.
His food pantry isn't the only one in need of a miracle. The Joan A. Male Family Support Center faces similar shortages. "It concerns us that people have a lot more food needs than we've ever seen," said Deborah Merrifield, its executive director.
The center also needs volunteers to work in this warehouse during the Christmas season. The nonprofit collects toys for needy children. "We serve a thousand children every holiday season," said Merrifield.
