Sandee Hewitt was shopping at Macy's in The Walden Galleria on Saturday and was surprised to find out that the Canadian shoppers in front of her were given an extra 15% discount.

When she asked about this, she was told that was the case. In fact they received a 3-day pass giving them 15% off of every purchase, above and beyond other coupons and offers.

She wanted to be in on the deal, but was told she did not qualify because she was local. She was outraged and sent 2 On Your Side an email, asking us to look into this.

We took her concerns right to Beth Charlton, who works in Macy's Corporate Communications Department. She says it is called the "Macy's Visitor Program" and it has been in effect for about 20 years. It offers international visitors a discount, along with visitors from at least 250 miles away.

The discounts are 10% in the rest of the country, but 15% her in Western New York for competitive reasons.

So the bad news for Sandee is that she doesn't qualify here, but the good news is that she now knows that if she's traveling, she can count on a discount in at least one store.
