Voters in Hamburg voted to downsize the town board from five members to three.

There were 4,269 votes for yes, 2,802 for no.  There are still 200 absentee ballots to count, but since the margin is so big, it won't make a difference.

The man behind the downsizing plan, Kevin Gaughan, is now five for five.

Hamburg now joins with other communities like Orchard Park, West Seneca, Alden and Evans and will downsize its town board from five board members to three. Kevin Gaughan calls it a big victory.

"It reflects a universal yearning and understanding that we citizens now have to take back this government, take responsibility for our community and reap the benefits from across the nation who is going to look to Western New York to lead in government reform," said Gaughan.

"The voters have spoken and now it's up to us, the remaining three councilmen come January, 2012, and now it's our time to prove Kevin Gaughan right, that this does work," said Hamburg Town Supervisor Steven Walters, who was against the downsizing.

The Hamburg Town Clerk said in general, voter turnout was low.
