Al "Digger" Cervi, a Basketball Hall of Famer born in Buffalo in 1917, has passed away at the age of 92.  Cervi lived in Brighton the past 58 years, and NBA Commissioner David Stern said on Monday Cervi was "one of our true pioneers".

Cervi was an early star for the Rochester Royals in the pre-NBA days and coached the 1955 NBA Champion Syracuse Nationals.  In Sports Illustrated's 2007 NBA Preview issue, Cervi was on the cover of the magazine as part of the NBA's "All-Time, All-Size Team".  He was one of 28 players aligned in descending order of height and was singled out as one of the greatest 5-11 players of all time.

Cervi was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1985.
