Incumbent Timothy Howard has declared himself the winner of the race for Erie County Sheriff.
The race had been close, with Howard keeping a small lead over Democrat, John Glascott, for much of the night.
The 2009 race for Sheriff had been smeared with negative campaigning. In one campaign ad, Glascott's claimed that Howard was responsible for the 2006 escape of Ralph "Bucky" Phillips, the county inmate who shot three state troopers, killing one, while he was on the run.
The issues surrounding the jails were a main issue of the campaign. Currently, there are state and federal investigations underway pertaining to the jails.
Another issue was whether or not the county-run jail is overcrowded and badly understaffed.
Sheriff Howard had responded to the negative attacks by asserting that Glascott's experience in a small town police department does not make him ready to be Sheriff.
