Green Energy Heated Pool

It's peak pool season in Western New York, but many people are not dishing out the cash to heat their pool in the middle of a recession.

A Jamestown man has an inexpensive alternative using his attic.

Mike Bradshaw just installed a water heating system that uses the hot air in his attic to heat water, and then pump it back in his pool.

The system has drastically cut his gas bill too. Last year, it cost him $339 dollars to heat the pool for one month with the old gas-powered heater. After he installed the new system, his monthly bill dropped to $45 bucks.

It also runs on the same amount of electricity as a 100 watt light bulb, "I think it's something everybody should be looking into...it's very affordable to run, it has a payback period of about three to four years...its designed to last 20 years," said Bradshaw.

It took Bradshaw three main items pull it off: The attic heater, which he purchased online; the piping and the temperature control unit.

Bradshaw installed everything for about $5,000 dollars in one day, and it will take him about three years to make it up in energy savings.
