A Western New York volunteer firefighter trained to put out fires is now accused of starting two.
Police picked up 20-year-old Jonathan R. Safe this morning while he was working at Rural/Metro Medical Services.
Safe is also a volunteer firefighter at Vigilant Fire Company in West Seneca. He's accused of setting two homes on fires last month while on duty as an EMT.
Safe is charged with third degree arson and reckless endangerment. Vigilant Fire Commission Chairman David Koehler says Safe has worked for the department for six years.
The chief says he will meet with the fire commission and likely put Safe on suspension until the outcome of the investigation.
Rural/Metro says it's cooperating with law enforcement and "that this is not indicative of the 550 dedicated employees who serve the community and the city of buffalo every day."
Safe is scheduled to appear in Buffalo City Court on Monday. A judge set his bail at $75,000 Friday morning.
