A stretch of road in the Town of Dunkirk was closed off for five hours on Tuesday morning after a tractor-trailer hit and killed a pedestrian.

Fredonia State Police say the accident happened right by Wilbur Road off of Route 5 in front of Shorewood Country Club's Golf Course.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. He has now been positively identified as Peter J. O'Hara, 41, of Brocton. Investigators believe O'Hara tried to cross Route 5 and went into the path of the tractor-trailer a little before 4am.

"At this point, we don't know why he was in that area at that time of the evening but we're investigating that right now," said Fredonia State Police Senior Investigator Greg Holt.

No charges against the driver have been filed. The State Police are continuing their investigation.
