BUFFALO, N.Y.-Olean's tough defense sent the Huskies to the Far West Regionals by beating East in the Section 6 Class B Championship game on Tuesday, 62-50. The Huskies are no stranger to winning a sectional title and advancing to the Far West Regional game, this will be their second year in a row and their sixth out of seven.
Olean Head Coach Jeff Anastasia reinforced that his team was not done just yet. Coach Anastasia said " it always feels great, I've just been real proud of the kids. We started four Sophomores last year and we made it to the state semifinals. This team is hungry to try and get back to that point again".
Usually East is not the team getting dominated down low, but on Tuesday the Huskies starting Forwards combined for 44 of the team's 62 points. Olean was led by Junior Forward # 11 Wil Bathurst with a game-high 27 points. Junior Center # 45 Sam Eckstrom added 17 points for the huskies, and had 11 in the first half.
Olean jumped out to a 15-4 lead to start the game and never looked back. At times East looked ready to make a run, but you can always count on the Huskies to play with poise and control, and thats just what they did. Olean's defense was the difference in the game, and made for slopping play by the Panthers. " I thought we did a nice job defensively, we had several great hustle plays that came at great times. When they made a big play we were able to come back, and I thought Wil made some big baskets for us" said Olean Coach Anastasia.
Olean improves to 21-1 on the season and advances to the Far West Regional game on Saturday in Rochester at the Blue Cross Arena at 4:30. The Huskies will play the winner of either Batavia or Hornell, that game will be played on Wednesday to crown a Section 5 Class B Champion and will set the stage for the Far West Regional match-up.
