LAKESHORE, NY - Multiple fire companies were called out to a field in Lakeshore where a brush fire burned almost 10 acres of land.

Crews on the scene said a nearby resident was burning a pile of brush late Friday night to get rid of it. The resident went to bed, thinking the fire was out.

"We had some wind pick up 12 hours later and of course, it is extremely, extremely dry and that's all it took," said Nick Mecca with the North Evans Fire Department.

Mecca warns that it is never a good idea to have an open burn on your property with the dry conditions we've been experiencing in our area the past few days.

Fire crews were able to put out the fire before it spread to hundreds of acres. Mecca said they were having some water issues with the fire being so far away from a roadway.
