KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) - Afghan officials say rioting has broken out for a fifth day against the destruction of Qurans at a U.S. base.

Protesters in eastern Afghanistan threw rocks at police and tried to storm the governor's house in Laghman province.

At least 25 people have been killed and hundreds wounded since Wednesday. Among the dead were two U.S. Army soldiers and one Afghan police officer.

Officials say police were trying to control the crowd, but were not shooting out of concern that even shots in the air would further incite them. A protest in a nearby province is reported peaceful so far.

American officials apologized and said it was a terrible mistake, but the incident has sent thousands to the streets in the deeply religious country.

Among the dead were two U.S. Army soldiers and one Afghan police officer.
