BUFFALO, NY - The City of Buffalo is taking action to make sure parking and traffic congestion headaches at Canalside don't ruin anyone's holiday weekend.
Mayor Brown's office announced Friday digital message displays will be placed in strategic locations in the downtown waterfront area as well as the addition of increased Buffalo Police Traffic Unit patrols. One sign will be placed at Erie and Marine drives. to let drivers know when the lot at Erie Basin Marina is full. Other signs will direct drivers to alternative parking lots.
"This is a new normal in our popular downtown waterfront area," said the mayor. "With huge crowds and dozens of activities taking place at Canalside and Erie Basin Marina, attracting city residents and visitors who are enjoying themselves and having a great time, the potential for traffic issues is there and we will continue to work with our waterfront stakeholders to address traffic and parking concerns."
Last weekend, several events letting out at the same time caused a traffic nightmare, with some drivers sitting in their cars for hours.
The city is also reminding visitors to the waterfront of the availability of public transportation, including the Main St. light rail system.
