South Carolina Agriculture Business Growing and Changing

AgSouth & the SC Department of Agriculture are helping farmers market their produce in this new technological age

Columbia, SC (WLTX) -- South Carolina's agriculture business is growing and changing with farmers wearing different hats and trying new things to market their business.

New farmers had the chance to learn about ways to market their products Monday thanks to the South Carolina Department of Agriculture and AgSouth.

“As an old time guy, I guess I need to step up and get with the program,” Calhoun County farmer Josh Johnson explained. “Yeah the marketing side is everything. We tend to focus a lot on the growing side, you can have piles and piles of product but if there's nowhere for that product to go, you haven't done yourself any good.”

They showed farmers how to use social media for marketing, how to partner with distributors and how to create business plans.

Officials with the South Carolina Department of Agriculture say farmers are also diversifying their products and growing more to ensure income in the face of a drought or a flood like last October.

“Farming is not just riding a tractor in the field anymore. There’s so many things in agribusiness that you can do on the farm, whether it be marketing whether it be the advertising component of it,” Ansley Turnblad with the South Carolina Department of Agriculture said.

Turnblad says the Certified SC Grown Program has hundreds of members and it keeps growing every day.

The group plans to have another event like this in the future to continue helping farmers.
