2 On Your Side was at the department of labor office in downtown Buffalo Monday morning when about 20 people attended an information session.
Joseph Espinoza is seeking a basic manufacturing job. He found the session to be helpful. He was told the pay for the position he is seeking would start at around $12.50 an hour with general gradual raises like $.50 an hour, "culminating to like $14 an hour over a year and a half, " he said.
The nation's largest solar provider plans to hire over 1,000 people to work at its Buffalo location.
Carolyn Bright, manager of the New York State Department of Labor Career Centers in Western New York, said: "there are 1,460 jobs, 500 will be in the manufacturing side, the other jobs will be engineers...those types of jobs."
She expects the positions will be posted on the SolarCity website this week. Applicants will need to at least have a high school diploma and be able to take and pass the Test for Basic Education (TABE), which contains basic math and reading questions.
During the information session a question did come up regarding SolarCity's merger with Tesla Motors. Espinosa told us that the SolarCity reps told everyone: "all the employment is through SolarCity. They were talking a lot about vertical integration as far as a one source solar shop."
Below is a list of upcoming SolarCity workforce information sessions to be held in Buffalo, Williamsville, Lackawanna and Orchard Park.
