Shelter in place lifted; suspect in custody

Wheatfield Standoff Ends Peacefully

WHEATFIELD, N.Y. -- The Niagara County Sheriff's Office has lifted a shelter in place for a section of Niagara Falls Boulevard in Wheatfield following reports of a man inside his home armed with a weapon.

Niagara County Sheriff Jim Voutour says a woman was able to escape the house, located in the 2900 block of Niagara Falls Boulevard, after a domestic dispute. Her husband is accused of firing several shots inside the home using his AK-47 rifle. She ran to a nearby store and called 911.

Deputies, troopers and police responded. The woman said the suspect had made threats against authorities.

SWAT teams assembled, and a shelter in place was issued for people living about a quarter mile on both sides of the incident.

Sheriff Voutour says within minutes of a perimeter being set up, the suspect surrendered and was taken into custody without incident.

"He was highly intoxicated," Sheriff Voutour said.

The suspect, 46, will likely face numerous charges, including reckless endangerment, Voutour said.

Sheriff Voutour declined to name the suspect in an effort to protect the identify of the victim. He said that information will come out at a later date in court. The sheriff said authorities have responded to the suspect's home in the past on domestic violence calls.

Sheriff Voutour said he was thankful nobody was hurt.

"(This is) exactly what we like. You know, we take all the necessary precautions, but we like it to end peacefully like it did," Sheriff Voutour said.
