LACKAWANNA, N.Y. -- Several schools made the decision to close on Thursday due to the fire in Lackawanna at the former Bethlehem Steel site.

Here is a list of schools that were closed Thursday (unless otherwise noted):

  • Baker Victory Services Day Treatment (staff to report)
  • BVS Early Childhood Program at Monarch (staff to report)
  • Cloverbank Home Bureau (evening classes canceled)
  • Frontier Central Schools
  • Global Concepts Charter School
  • Lackawanna City Schools
  • OLV Family Care Center
  • Randolph Academy, Hamburg Campus
  • Ss. Peter & Paul School, Hamburg
  • St. Francis High School

Frontier Central School District, located at 5120 Orchard Avenue Hamburg, was the district most affected by a massive fire at the former Bethlehem Steel site.

The district announced Wednesday that it would cancel classes for Thursday due to the fire continuing to burn.

Earlier Wednesday, the district worked with West Seneca and Lakeshore School Districts to relocate students who were in two different elementary schools close to where smoke, debris and air quality was getting bad.

Dr. Bret Apthorpe, Fronteir's superintendent, told 2 On Your Side's Erica Brecher phone tonight that he's thankful all of the students remained safe today and he wants to make sure the same is true tomorrow (Thursday).

"What we're being told by the Town of Hamburg Emergency Services is that Route 5 will be closed until at least 4 tomorrow as well as there may be some surrounding roads closed," he said. "We've also been advised that the wind is most likely going to shift tonight, bringing that smoke potentially back over to the area it was this morning. "
