CITY OF TONAWANDA, N.Y. -- City of Tonawanda Police searched for a vehicle that they thought may have gone into the city's canal Saturday night.
Police Captain Foels said the search began when the department received a report of tire tracks leading into the canal near East Niagara Street and Fillmore Ave.
He said the department received a similar report about five years ago and discovered a car in the water near the location of the tracks.
He also said the angle of the tracks makes it look as if the vehicle went into the water.
The area of the canal near where the tracks were seen is about 15-20 feet deep, he explained.
At about 8:45 p.m. Foels said the department's Police Underwater Squad was about to start searching for the vehicle.
He added, however, there are no reports of missing individuals or missing vehicles that they believe the tire tracks could relate to.
At about 9:30 p.m., the police department's dive team called off the investigation and started packing up after concluding there was not a submerged vehicle.
