Police: speeding a factor in Ellery crash

Police say speeding caused fatal crash in Ellery

TOWN OF ELLERY, N.Y. -- A man was found dead in a vehicle that crashed about 30 feet off a roadway in the Town of Ellery Saturday.

State police say a farmer found the driver, Ryan T. Abbey, 21, of Bemus Point, NY, dead in the vehicle. That car was in the woods off of Bayview Road, a half mile north of Brown Hill Road.

While the cause of the accident was initially under investigation Saturday, on Sunday State Trooper Public Information Officer Jim O'Callaghan said investigators had a better idea of what may have caused the accident.

O'Callaghan said the accident happened near a sharp curve in the Town of Ellery. In addition, how far Abbey's vehicle traveled from the roadway indicates his speed at the time was likely a factor.

Alcohol or other drugs are not believed to have played a roll, O'Callaghan added.

The accident is still under investigation.
